Death Sentence for Child Offender Confirmed as Three Death Row Inmates Granted Reprieve

The death sentence of a child offender in Isfahan has been confirmed by Iran’s Supreme Court. Meanwhile, three inmates in Rey, Qom, and Kazerun cities, who were previously sentenced to death in separate cases on murder charges, have been granted reprieve after obtaining the consent of the victims’ heirs.

According to Hrana news agency citing Reka, the death sentence of a child offender in Isfahan was confirmed by Iran’s Supreme Court.

Based on the report, on November 6, 2018, following the discovery of the body of a 16-year-old child in the vicinity of Dar Afshan village in Isfahan, a suspect was arrested in connection with the case.

The suspect, who was below the legal age of culpability at the time of committing the crime, lured 16-year-old Morteza Rezaei out of his house with several text messages and killed him with 24 knife stabs in the deserts of Dar Afshan village.

The suspect was sentenced to death during the trial proceedings, and the sentence was confirmed by Iran’s Supreme Court.

According to the victim’s mother, the sentence is expected to be carried out in early 2021.

Death Row Inmate Granted Reprieve in Rey

According to Mizan, the head of Rey District Court announced the reprieve of a death row inmate after 18 years.

Rasoul Jalali, head of Rey District Court stated: “In 2002, a murder occurred in Rey city, and after judicial investigations, the suspect was found guilty.”

He noted: “Considering the suspect’s remorse, the investigating court requested the victims’ heirs to participate in reconciliation negotiations, and after several sessions, a settlement was reached in the case, and the suspect was granted reprieve from execution.”

Pardon Granted to Death-Sentenced Inmate in Qom

According to Hamshahri, the director general of Qom Province prisons announced the release of a death-sentenced inmate after 11 years.

The director general of Qom Province prisons stated: “The family of a 22-year-old young man who was killed in a altercation with his neighbor eleven years ago, consented to the freedom of the convicted person without receiving any monetary compensation as blood money.”

Mortazavi added: Since the beginning of this year to date, eleven inmates have been released from capital punishment.

Death Row Inmate Spared from Execution in Kazerun

According to Mizan, the acting head of the Dispute Resolution Development Center of Fars announced the reprieve of a death-sentenced inmate from execution in Kazerun.

The acting head of the Dispute Resolution Development Center of Fars stated: “About four years ago, during an altercation and dispute in Kazerun District, a 55-year-old man was killed with a cold weapon.”

Tavani added: “After the case was registered and the judicial investigation process was completed, the suspect was ultimately sentenced to death. Through the dedicated efforts and pursuits of the members of the sixth branch of the Kazerun Dispute Resolution Council, with the consent of the victims’ heirs, the case was closed and the death-sentenced inmate was saved from execution.”
