Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, expressed support for “Ukraine’s accession to the European Union in the long term” during a press conference on Sunday, March 27.

Von der Leyen, responding to a question from Euronews correspondent, emphasized the areas of cooperation between the European Union and Ukraine, stressing that Ukraine is part of the European Union in the long term. She added: “They are one of us and we want them to be in the Union.”

Volodymyr Zelensky, President of Ukraine, also announced a phone call with von der Leyen on Sunday evening. In a tweet, Zelensky outlined the main points of the telephone conversation as specific decisions to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities, substantial financial assistance, and Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.

Zelensky had insisted on Saturday, March 26, in a tweet for faster decision-making regarding Ukraine’s EU membership. He wrote: “This is a critical moment to end long-term negotiations once and for all and make a decision regarding Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.”

Ukraine has long been striving to join the European Union. The goal of EU accession has been enshrined in the country’s constitution since 2019.
