Increased Risk of Nuclear Weapons Proliferation in the Region with Iran’s Nuclear Program Advancement

The European Union warned of the advancement of Iran’s nuclear program and the risk of nuclear weapons proliferation in the region.

“Stephan Clement,” ambassador and permanent representative of the European Union to international organizations based in Vienna, called for the implementation of all monitoring and verification measures related to the 2015 agreement and the additional protocol, without referring to illegal actions regarding the current status of JCPOA implementation.

According to IRNA, Stephan Clement, during a meeting of the Board of Governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency on Tuesday, claimed that progress in Iran’s nuclear program has increased the risk of a nuclear weapons proliferation crisis in the region. He also expressed that while the European Union remains committed to the JCPOA, he blamed Iran for the current situation in implementing the agreement and said: “We regret that Iran has not made the necessary decisions to return to this agreement and has not taken the necessary measures, but instead continues to significantly expand its nuclear program.”

Clement also, while referring to the political support of EU member states and international diplomatic efforts to resume full implementation of the JCPOA, called on all countries to support the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 (2015).
