Lawyer of Ahmadrreza Jalali: We Have Requested the Formation of a New Court for Our Client

The defense lawyer of Ahmadrreza Jalali, an Iranian-Swedish physician and researcher sentenced to death in Iran, says that “his lawyers requested a retrial from the judiciary several days ago”.

Haleh Mousavian told France Press Agency that evidence has been presented showing that “Mr. Jalali had no role in identifying Iranian nuclear scientists,” and therefore they are demanding that a new trial be held for their client.

Ahmadrreza Jalali was sentenced to death in 2017 on charges of “transferring information about two Iranian nuclear scientists to Mossad, which led to their assassination.” The Swedish government and Mr. Jalali’s relatives have rejected these charges.

The Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) and other state-aligned media outlets in Iran have recently broadcast and published sections of “forced confessions” by Ahmadrreza Jalali, an Iranian-Swedish national.

These media outlets had previously announced, citing Islamic Republic officials, that the execution of this dual-national prisoner would be carried out by the end of Ordibehesht of this year, meaning by Saturday at the latest (31 Ordibehesht).

In recent years, the Iranian government has arrested or exchanged a large number of foreign nationals and dual-national Iranians on various charges including “espionage” and “cooperation with hostile states.”
