Hassan Mozaffari, the general and revolutionary prosecutor of Zanjan Province, announced on Monday that following the death of a six-year-old child, the mayor of Zanjan along with the mayor of District 3 have been arrested.
According to a report by “Mizan,” the news agency of the judiciary, the child fell into a pit that lacked safety barriers and a cover, and died of suffocation.
The report adds that following the child’s death, the general and revolutionary prosecutor of Zanjan Province visited the accident scene and summoned the mayor of Zanjan, the mayor of District 3, and the CEO of the municipal water and wastewater company.
The Zanjan Province prosecutor, referring to residents’ dissatisfaction with Zanjan Municipality’s performance, stated: “Following investigations conducted and in light of the failure to implement government regulations, lack of proper oversight, and negligence by municipal officials, the mayor of Zanjan along with the mayor of District 3 have been placed under custody by judicial order, and subsequent investigations are underway. The final report will be announced once investigations are completed.”
Meanwhile, Mohammad Moradi, the head of public relations for Zanjan Municipality, confirmed the news to IRNA, saying: “Due to the death of this child, the mayor of Zanjan was arrested as responsible for some explanations.”
He added: “It is unclear whether the pit into which the child fell had safety barriers that were removed, or whether it never had barriers in the first place.”
Nevertheless, the Zanjan prosecutor’s office announced: “We will deal with those responsible for the incident with legal action, firmly and without any leniency.”
