New Wave of Arrests Begins in Khuzestan Province

Some reports indicate a new wave of arrests in Khuzestan Province.

The Hrana news website, which publishes Iranian human rights news, reported on Wednesday, October 24, that at least 133 people have been arrested following an armed attack on a military parade in Ahvaz on September 22.

Four attackers were involved in that assault, who according to Islamic Republic security officials were all killed.

Following that incident, a wave of arrests began targeting individuals who, according to officials, were connected to the event. The governor of Khuzestan claimed that only one woman was among those arrested, but local civil activists have reported the number of women to be more than one.

In the current week, the Center for Defenders of Human Rights, headed by Shirin Ebadi, issued a statement expressing concern and condemning the widespread detention of Ahvaz citizens following the armed attack on the military parade in Ahvaz.
