Official COVID-19 Statistics in Iran; Warning About Rising Death Toll Again in Esfand

As daily cases of coronavirus infection rise again, several experts have warned about the possibility of daily COVID-19 cases reaching five digits in the coming days and an increase in death toll again in the month of Esfand.

On Thursday, December 30th, Iran’s Ministry of Health reported 20 additional deaths from coronavirus and over 4,600 new cases in the past 24 hours.

According to this report, the total number of coronavirus deaths in Iran has reached 132,152 and the total number of confirmed patients has reached 6,236,567.

Official coronavirus statistics are being announced daily by Iran’s Ministry of Health, while officials from the Medical Council Organization had previously stated that the actual figures are three to four times higher than the officially reported numbers.

Meanwhile, Masoud Yunesian, a member of the national scientific committee for combating coronavirus, said on Thursday in an interview with Hamshahri newspaper that if the current situation continues, the number of new daily patients will soon reach five digits, referring to a notable increase in cases over the past two weeks.

Aliresa Naji, head of the virology research center at Masih Daneshvari Hospital, also said in this regard that the country may face a new peak of the disease in Esfand month, which could even increase the death toll.

Nader Toukali, deputy treatment director of Tehran Province’s coronavirus response headquarters, reported on Wednesday, December 29th, about the “dominance” of the Omicron variant in the province and stated that approximately 45 to 50 percent of cases in Tehran are Omicron.
