Statistical Center: Country’s Employed Population Decreased by 1.2 Million

Iran’s Statistical Center says the employed population aged 15 and older in this summer was 23 million and 542 thousand, which represents a decrease of approximately one million, two hundred and ten thousand compared to the same season last year.
Despite a significant drop in the country’s employed population, the unemployment rate in Iran not only did not increase, but actually fell by 1 percent, reaching 9.5 percent.
Previously, the Majlis Research Center had reported that a large number of people who were looking for jobs have abandoned their job search due to their failure to find employment.
For this reason, although the employed population of the country has declined sharply, the unemployment rate, which depends on the number of economically active individuals, has decreased.
Iran’s Statistical Center also states that the economic participation rate in this summer compared to the same season last year decreased by 3.2 percent.
This report, published on Wednesday on the website of this government institution, states that in summer 2020, 41.8 percent of the population aged 15 and older were economically active, meaning they were either employed or unemployed and actively seeking work.
As a result, more than 58 percent of Iran’s working-age population are not actually looking for work.
The unemployment rate for young people aged 15 to 24 indicates that 23.1 percent of the economically active people in this age group were unemployed in summer 2020. Examining the unemployment rate for the age group 18 to 35 also shows that 16.9 percent of the economically active population in this age group were unemployed.
