Suspected killing of a lawyer in Kamranieh, Tehran

A lawyer was shot and killed Wednesday night in Tehran. His name, Hamid Hajian, has been mentioned in recent economic cases. This has given the issue greater dimensions. Nevertheless, it is said that the motive of the attacker is still unclear.

Hamid Hajian, a first-class practicing lawyer, was shot and killed Wednesday evening on April 24 in the Kamranieh area of Tehran. According to Iranian media reports and quoting the head of Tehran’s criminal prosecutor’s office, the attacker fired “a large number of bullets” at Hamid Hajian and a woman who was accompanying him.

Mohammad Shahrihari emphasized that “some individuals and colleagues of Hajian claimed that he was a lawyer in a series of economic corruption cases, but this matter has not yet been proven and its validity and invalidity are unclear”.

This comes as hours after news of Hajian’s death was broadcast, social media posts attributed a quote to Hossein Hedayati, one of the defendants in the Sarmaye Bank case, saying in his last court session that “Go after Hamid Hajian, who is an influential lawyer and has stolen and taken away 50 billion tomans of my money. Hajian told me that if I mention his name in court, he will file a complaint against me; perhaps Mr. Yagini’s escape is also his doing”.

Ali Akbar Yagini is another defendant in the Sarmaye Bank case who was said to have gone missing.

Mohammadali Khrasani, the lawyer of Hossein Hedayati, stating he was unaware of Hamid Hajian’s killing, said that Hajian’s killing has no connection to Hedayati’s case.

The head of Tehran’s criminal prosecutor’s office spoke of the unclear “cause and motive of the attacker or attackers” and announced that an order to identify the perpetrator “has been issued”.

The identity of the woman accompanying Hajian is not known.
