U.S. security and federal authorities said Wednesday they are investigating suspicious packages sent to former U.S. President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, the Democratic Party’s candidate in the last presidential election.
A package addressed to Clinton was found late Tuesday, and a package intended for President Obama was discovered early Wednesday.
President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence condemned the attempted attacks on Twitter, calling them “cowardly” acts that have no place in this country, according to them.
On Wednesday afternoon, Donald Trump said his administration would provide more information as it conducts further investigations. While condemning the sending of suspicious packages, he stated that political violence has no place in America.
Mike Pence thanked the Secret Service and police in his tweet for identifying and seizing these packages, saying that justice will be served against the perpetrator or perpetrators of these failed attacks.
President Trump, by retweeting his vice president’s tweet, wrote, “I wholeheartedly agree!”
Paul Ryan, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, also called for the prosecution of those behind these attacks in a tweet, saying “We cannot tolerate any attempt to spread terror among the people.”
Authorities say both packages were discovered during routine inspection of mail packages, and neither Obama nor Clinton were in danger.
Hillary Clinton thanked the U.S. Secret Service for their timely action in discovering the suspicious package.
News agencies have also reported the sending of several other suspicious packages. The Associated Press reported that a suspicious package was also sent to Debbie Wasserman Schultz, a Democratic representative from Florida. Hillary Clinton had been giving speeches on behalf of Democratic candidates in Florida. The news agency also reported the sending of a suspicious package to CNN.
The U.S. Secret Service, in a tweet, announced the news and stated that investigations in this matter have begun in cooperation with law enforcement.
Earlier this week, a mail package containing a small bomb was discovered that had been sent to George Soros, a liberal billionaire.
New York police authorities say that the suspicious package sent to CNN appears to be possibly connected to suspicious packages sent to Obama, Clinton, and Soros.
The governor of New York also said his office in Manhattan received a suspicious package. According to reports, a suspicious package was also sent to John Brennan.
However, New York police said the package sent to the governor of the state was not a bomb and had no connection to the other packages.
