United States Sanctions Mohammad Javad Zarif

The U.S. Department of the Treasury has added Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, to its sanctions list. The department states that Zarif is the most important spokesperson for Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, and serves as a propagandist for the Iranian regime.
The U.S. Department of the Treasury on Wednesday, July 31, added Mohammad Javad Zarif, the Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, to its sanctions list. In its justification, the department stated that Zarif acts on behalf of the leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The U.S. government had previously sanctioned Ali Khamenei and assets and institutions affiliated with him.
Steven Mnuchin, U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, said that “Javad Zarif is a fearless implementer of the Supreme Leader’s directives and the regime’s most important spokesman on the global stage.”
U.S. officials had previously stated that Mohammad Javad Zarif would very likely be added to the American sanctions list.
Zarif’s Response
The Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic, in response to the news of his sanctioning, wrote in a tweet that this sanction has no impact on him and his family, since they do not hold any assets outside the country.
