Evin Prison: Extension of Jafar Ebrahimi's detention order

HRANA News Agency – The arrest warrant for Jafar Ebrahimi, a teacher union activist, has been extended for the second time. Despite the passage of 95 days since his arrest, Mr. Ebrahimi is still being held in the Ministry of Intelligence’s detention center, known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison, in limbo.

According to the HRANA news agency, citing the channel of the Coordination Council of Iranian Teachers' Unions, the arrest warrant for teachers' union activist Jafar Ebrahimi has been extended.

According to this report, today, Thursday, August 4, Samaneh Abedini, the wife of Jafar Ebrahimi, met with him in a private room in the presence of his case expert. During this meeting, Mr. Ebrahimi informed his wife of the extension of his arrest warrant.

According to Samaneh Abedini, "Mr. Ebrahimi is currently being held in the Ministry of Intelligence's detention center, known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison, along with another person with public offenses. Also, this union activist is not in good physical condition."

For the past month, Jafar Ebrahimi, along with other teachers' union activists, have been denied the right to make phone calls and visit their families.

In early July of this year, Mr. Ebrahimi’s family, along with the families of nine other detained union and labor activists, wrote an open letter to protest their continued detention. In the letter, they called for “an immediate end to the false cases against them” and the unconditional release of their loved ones.

On June 14, Jafar Ebrahimi, along with two other union activists, Mohammad Habibi and Rasoul Badaghi, were transferred to solitary confinement in Ward 240 of the prison. These individuals, along with another teacher union activist, Ali Akbar Baghani, had been arrested on May 1 and transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence detention center known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison.

Earlier, HRANA reported on the continued obstruction of the Ministry of Intelligence by its agents in preventing the temporary release of Jafar Ebrahimi, despite the passage of two weeks since the order was issued and the bail was posted. Mr. Ebrahimi was scheduled to be released from the Ministry of Intelligence's detention center, known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison, on June 28 of this year after posting a bail of 700 million Tomans; something that has not been possible so far due to the obstruction of the security forces.

An informed source told HRANA in this regard: "Mr. Ebrahimi's bail has been posted and a release letter has even been sent to Detention Center 209, but the ministry's interrogator has prevented his release despite the interrogator's order. Now there is concern that this union activist will be kept in detention under this pretext until the sentence is carried out."

On the eve of Teachers' Week in Iran, a number of union activists were summoned by security agencies and some were arrested. On Sunday, May 1, 2022, working and retired teachers and educators across the country gathered in more than 40 cities to protest the failure to address their demands in front of education departments, and a number of union activists were also arrested. HRANA had previously covered the protests of teachers and educators in the country in May this year in a comprehensive report.

On June 25, HRANA published a report detailing the latest situation and the continued detention of these citizens.

Jafar Ebrahimi is a teacher and a member of the Tehran Teachers' Union. He has previously been arrested and sentenced for his activities. In January of last year, he was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison by the Karaj Revolutionary Court.
