230 Kilograms of Heroin ‘Loaded from Iran’ Discovered at Azerbaijan Customs

Azerbaijan’s customs authority reported on Tuesday, April 13, the discovery of a 230-kilogram shipment of heroin loaded from Iran in a truck.

According to the report published on Azerbaijan’s customs website, the heroin shipment was hidden inside a load of potatoes in the truck.

The truck entered Azerbaijan’s Astara customs from Iran and was supposed to deliver its cargo to Ukraine, but trained dogs successfully detected the heroin shipment hidden inside the potato cargo.

The report adds that the truck driver was an Azerbaijani citizen and has been arrested.

Currently, approximately 200 Iranian citizens are held in Azerbaijan’s prisons, the majority of whom have been detained on drug trafficking charges.

Last week, Abbas Mousavi, Iran’s ambassador to Baku, visited 30 Iranian citizens in prison, including 12 women, at one of Baku’s prisons.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev, by signing a decree on the occasion of Nowruz, granted amnesty to seven Iranians.
