Ahvaz Fire Department: If Mehziar Complex Parking Collapses, 2,000 People Will Die

The head of Ahvaz Municipality’s Fire Department and Safety Services Organization says the “Mehziar City Center” building and many of Ahvaz’s hospitals are in much more critical condition than the Metropol building, and if the City Center parking structure collapses, 2,000 people will be killed.

Ibrahim Ghanbari said on Tuesday, June 7: The Ahvaz Fire Department has identified 409 buildings including passages, city centers, parking lots, fuel stations, student dormitories, cinemas, hospitals, and buildings of 10 floors and above as unsafe and critical in Ahvaz city, and has issued warnings for them.

According to him, “The current situation of Mehziar City Center in Ahvaz is a catastrophe; if the Mehziar City Center parking collapses, we will have 2,000 deaths.”

The Mehziar complex in Ahvaz spans an area of 1,400 square meters and contains 175 commercial units, a traditional restaurant on the roof, an amusement park on two floors, and a hypermarket on two floors.

Following the collapse of the Metropol tower in Abadan on June 2, which has so far resulted in more than 40 deaths, the discussion about unsafe buildings in Iran has intensified.

Meanwhile, Ali Salehi, the prosecutor of Tehran, says it was decided in the session of the committee on dangerous building safety that owners and board members of critical buildings in district six of Tehran should be summoned to the Tehran prosecution office.

IRNA news agency reported that for the first time in July 2020, a list of unsafe buildings in Tehran was announced by the city’s 22 districts: Vague and contradictory statements about the list of high-risk buildings in Iran’s capital are being raised under circumstances where similar statistics in the country have not yet been discussed.

Also, recently IRNA reported that currently in the metropolis of Tehran, there are 33,000 unsafe buildings and more than 23,000 low-risk buildings.

The report adds that the condition of 129 buildings is “critical” in terms of safety and 3,488 buildings are “high-risk”: “Each of these buildings alone could, in case of severe subsidence or collapse, follow in the footsteps of the Plasco building collapse, cruise company incident, and explosion at Sinemahr clinic and cause other irreparable disasters.”

The website “Ensaf News” also previously reported, referring to the list of 129 critical buildings in Tehran, that the names of Bu-Ali, Fajr, Shahdan-e Yaft-Abad, Fayaz Bakhsh, Ghiassi, Ziai, Torfe hospitals and Shahid Shah-Abadi medical center are seen in this list.

Also, Shahid University, Dr. Shariati Technical and Vocational University, and Yadegar-e Imam University have also been introduced as unsafe buildings in Tehran.
