Ali Younesi’s Lawyer: Strange Occurrences Have Happened in His Case

The chosen lawyer for imprisoned conscientious objector Ali Younesi spoke about “strange actions by some officials” with his client. This outstanding student has been told he can meet with the Swedish ambassador, but the embassy of this country in Tehran is unaware of the matter.

Mostafa Nili, the chosen lawyer for the Younesi family to defend their detained son Ali, revealed that strange incidents are happening to his client, incidents that can sometimes be disturbing.

According to Nili, Ensaf News reported that case officials told Ali Younesi that his brother had met with senior Swedish officials and if he wishes, he can meet with the Swedish ambassador.

Apparently, Ali Younesi discussed this matter with his family and faced family opposition.

In another interview, Nili called this proposal “very strange” and emphasized: “We have repeatedly seen that judicial authorities do not even allow the interference of the chair of Commission 90 in cases, let alone a foreign country’s official.”

The Swedish Embassy in Tehran has stated it is unaware of this matter.

Ali Younesi, one of Iran’s outstanding students and winner of the gold medal in the International Astronomy Olympiad, was arrested in Farvardin of this year along with Amirhossein Moradi, an outstanding physics student, and has since been held in the security ward of Evin Prison.

The charges against them include “connection with the Mujahedin-e Khalq Organization” and “sabotage activities.” The families of these two prisoners have called the charges “ridiculous” and “fabricated.”

Is Younesi Facing the Danger of Execution?

In “security” cases, a chosen lawyer cannot declare representation during the preliminary investigation phase. For this reason, until the case goes to court and an indictment is issued, Mostafa Nili, the family’s chosen lawyer, cannot review the case file.

He stated: “I have not yet studied this case and do not have precise information about it. Everything I am saying about this is based on conversations that the Younesi family has had with their son.”

The appointment of a court-assigned lawyer for Ali Younesi and Amirhossein Moradi by the prosecutor is a concerning action, as according to Nili, “in crimes covered by Article 48,” the defendant can choose his lawyer from an approved list, “except in crimes punishable by execution or life imprisonment.”

Previously, an unprecedented event had also occurred in connection with this case. Ali Younesi and Amirhossein Moradi met with “a group of Sharif University students” in the presence of officials and judicial authorities at the Palace of Justice.

Nili emphasized that this meeting was also “strange in its own way.”

Proposal for Television Confession

A few days ago, Aida Younesi, Ali’s sister, revealed that her brother has been proposed to accept the charges in a television program in order to change his execution sentence to life imprisonment.

According to Aida Younesi, Ministry of Intelligence officers told her brother that they decide what sentence the judge will issue.

Mostafa Nili also reported on behalf of Ali Younesi’s father that Ali complained to the prison supervisor about mistreatment he has suffered, and the supervisor promised to follow up. Additionally, he described abnormal treatment in two letters to the prison director.

Mostafa Nili emphasized: “Of course, there are other matters that will be raised later if necessary.”
