An Isfahan Citizen’s Account: My Mother Died from COVID-19, But They Wrote Cancer

Masoud Borjian, a cultural and social activist from Isfahan, shared his mother’s death certificate on Twitter, stating that the cemetery officials where she was buried recorded the cause of her death as cancer instead of coronavirus infection.
On Tuesday, Ordibehesht 2nd, the cultural and social activist from Isfahan posted images of his mother’s death certificate, which listed the cause of death as coronavirus infection and cardiopulmonary arrest. However, he stated that Isfahan Cemetery, where his mother was buried, recorded the cause of death as cancer in official documents.
According to this activist, the death certificate issued mentions breast cancer and high blood pressure as underlying conditions. However, the cemetery, insisting that his mother had previously suffered from breast cancer, designated this disease as the primary cause of her death.
This is not the first time that the Islamic Republic has attempted to cover up information about coronavirus deaths in Iran by altering records. Previously, a physician working at one of Shiraz’s hospitals sent an account to Voice of America stating that out of every five deaths from the new coronavirus, COVID-19, only one actually lists the true cause of death.
The Iranian doctor, in an audio file provided to Voice of America, stated that he and others were asked to record causes of death for the majority of coronavirus victims as conditions such as acute respiratory illness or heart attack.
Based on available information, Islamic Republic authorities have attempted to conceal the prevalence of the coronavirus, as well as the number of infected individuals and deaths since the very beginning of the virus’s outbreak in Iran. According to a World Health Organization official, the figures announced by Iranian authorities regarding coronavirus cases represent only one-fifth of the actual number of infected individuals.
According to the latest published reports, the figures that Islamic Republic authorities announced as of Tuesday, Ordibehesht 2nd, 1399, show that by this date, the total number of people infected with the virus in Iran had reached 84,802, and 5,297 people had lost their lives due to coronavirus infection.
