Continued Protests by Sungun Varzaghan Complex Workers; Number of Detained Workers Increases to 7

On Thursday, July 16, workers at the Sungun Varzaghan complex held a strike and gathering for the third consecutive day. During this gathering, two protesting workers were arrested by security forces through the use of violence and transferred to an unknown location. With the inclusion of these individuals, the number of detained workers from the Sungun Varzaghan complex has increased to 7.
According to the Hrana news agency, citing the Iranian Free Workers’ Union, today, Thursday, July 16, 2022, workers at the Sungun Varzaghan mine held their third consecutive day of strike and gathering within their workplace premises.
Based on this report, the gathering of these citizens turned violent with the intervention of military forces, and officers arrested two of the protesting workers.
The identities of these workers are named as “Saeed Jabarian and Farzad Zalizadeh.”
On Tuesday, July 14, two workers from the Sungun Varzaghan copper complex, and also yesterday, “Jafar Abaspour, Mehrdad Manfred, and Khodai Asami,” other protesting workers from this complex were arrested and transferred to an unknown location. With the inclusion of today’s arrests, the number of detained workers from the Sungun Varzaghan mine has increased to 7.
At the time of preparing this report, there is no information available regarding the place of detention and the charges brought against these workers.
Workers at this complex have been pursuing for several months the equalization of wages with permanent workers and workers at other mines, and also have other demands including the complete and correct implementation of job classification. However, despite repeated protests and strikes, the complex management and contracting companies have not yet implemented these workers’ demands.
