Death by Suicide of Inmate Sentenced to Execution in Qarchak Prison

On Saturday, the 18th of Tirmah, an inmate sentenced to execution in the solitary cells of Qarchak Prison in Karaj committed suicide by taking pills and lost his life. This inmate had been transferred to the prison’s disciplinary solitary cell for unknown reasons on the morning of the incident.

According to a report by Hrana news agency, the news organ of the Iranian human rights activists collective, on Saturday, the 18th of Tirmah 1401, an inmate sentenced to execution in Hall 3, Unit 2 of Qarchak Prison in Karaj, committed suicide by taking pills and died.

Hrana has identified this inmate as Masoud Kheirabadi.

This inmate had been sentenced to execution by judicial authorities for drug-related crimes. According to sources close to the inmate, he was among the ward disciplinarians in his place of detention during his time in prison.

For unknown reasons, on the order of the prison’s disciplinary council, this inmate was transferred at 10 a.m. on Saturday to the closed ward (solitary cells) of Unit 2 of Qarchak Prison. At 4 p.m. on the same day, his lifeless body was found by prison officials.

Previously, Hrana had issued a report addressing the problems faced by inmates held in Unit 2 of Qarchak Prison in Karaj. Inmates held in this unit face numerous problems including severe overcrowding, lack of ventilation and cooling systems, as well as inadequate medical care.
