Intelligence Strike at Sea; Claims of Deaths of ‘Behnam Rezaei,’ ‘Alireza Tangsiri’ and Escalation of Security Tensions in Iran

An intelligence strike at sea with claims of the death of Behnam Rezaei, coinciding with reports of explosions and extensive air defense activity in various Iranian cities, indicates an increase in attacks against Iran.

In a new development in regional tensions, the Israeli military has claimed that “Behnam Rezaei,” the head of the intelligence division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, was killed during an operation. This claim comes as multiple reports have emerged of explosions and increased air defense activities in various parts of Iran.

The Israeli military spokesman announced that in this operation, in addition to Rezaei, “Alireza Tangsiri,” commander of the IRGC Navy, also lost his life. According to him, Rezaei was one of the key figures in the field of maritime intelligence and played an important role in gathering security data about countries in the region.

Following these claims, the Israeli military emphasized that this operation was part of a broader series of attacks that, according to the military institution, has resulted in the deaths of dozens of other IRGC commanders. According to a statement released by the Israeli military, these attacks have dealt a serious blow to the IRGC’s command and control structure.

The statement also claimed that these measures have noticeably reduced the operational capacity of the IRGC in the maritime sphere and have affected its military activities in the region.

Inside Iran, coinciding with the publication of this news, field reports indicate an increase in military and air defense movements in several cities. Based on eyewitness accounts and images posted on social media, on the afternoon of Thursday, March 26, corresponding to Farvardin 6, sounds of explosions and air defense fire were heard in various parts of the country.

In Tehran, multiple areas including Naziabad, Fallah, Imamzadeh Hasan, Republic Square, Pirouzi, Tarshanj, Seyyed Khandan, Haftchnar, Baharestan, and Boulevard Ferdows East witnessed intense air defense activity. Some citizens reported hearing prolonged and rapid-fire sounds as well as scattered explosions.

In some areas, disruptions to electricity and mobile phone networks were reported. In particular, on Boulevard Ferdows East, power outages and communication disruptions drew the attention of users.

Reports from other cities indicate similar conditions. In Mashhad, from around 18:40 to 18:54, several explosions and air defense activities were reported in areas such as Qasim Abad, Vakil Abad, Elahieh, and Seyyed Razi, and even ground tremors were felt in some places. Some local sources have suggested that sensitive centers in the city may have been targeted.

In Nishapur, smoke and explosions were also observed around the Khayam Industrial Park and Kharo. Additionally, in Bojnurd, the sound of air defense was reported for the first time in the evening hours, something that had not occurred previously.

In northern provinces of the country, including Mazandaran, fighter jet passages and drone sightings have been reported. Witnesses in cities such as Babolsar, Sari, and Fereydunkenar reported drones flying at low altitudes, and some reports referred to the use of “Shahed” drones.

These developments occurring simultaneously in several provinces indicate an increase in the level of alert and air defense response across the country over a short period of time. However, so far, no Iranian official has directly confirmed or denied these claims about the deaths of IRGC commanders.

A review of international news sources also shows that in recent months, tensions between Iran and Israel, particularly in the fields of intelligence and maritime military operations, have increased, and the two sides have repeatedly accused each other of conducting covert and targeted operations. Some analysts believe that such claims, whether confirmed or not, constitute part of a narrative war and psychological pressure at the regional level.

Overall, this collection of reports tells of a tense day in Iran’s security environment; a day that, with significant military claims from Israel and their coincidence with air defense movements within the country, has drawn the attention of many observers.
