ISIS Assassinates Coptic Priest in Egypt

The Islamic State group (ISIS) has claimed responsibility for the assassination of a Coptic priest in Egypt. The priest, named Rafael Moses, was targeted in an attack by ISIS members in the city of Arish.

Egypt’s Interior Minister confirmed on Thursday evening (June 30/June 21) the killing of the Coptic priest in Arish province. The Islamic State group (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the murder of Rafael Moses on the internet and accused him of “fighting against Islam.” The involvement of ISIS in this assassination has not yet been confirmed by other sources.

Ahmed al-Tayyeb, rector of Al-Azhar University, which is considered the primary religious authority for Muslims in Egypt, condemned the assassination of Moses and called it abominable.

Coptic Christians make up approximately ten percent of Egypt’s population. In recent years, this segment of Egypt’s population has increasingly complained of discrimination and has been constantly targeted by attacks from extremist Islamists.
