Mahsa Amini Nominated as Final Candidate for EU’s Prestigious Human Rights Award

Mahsa (Zhina) Amini has been nominated as a final candidate for the European Union’s prestigious human rights award.

Last Thursday, the European Parliament announced Mahsa Amini and the “Woman, Life, Freedom” movement as one of three final nominees for the “Sakharov” Prize.

The annual Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought has been awarded since 1988 to individuals and organizations that defend human rights and fundamental freedoms. The award is named after André Sakharov, a Soviet physicist and political dissident, and carries a monetary value of 50,000 euros.

According to the Associated Press, McAllister, head of foreign policy at the European Parliament, said: “The selection of Mahsa and the Woman, Life, Freedom movement as one of the three main nominees for the Sakharov Prize is intended to honor their courageous struggle for women’s rights.”

The prestigious human rights award is given annually to individuals or groups that work in the struggle against authoritarianism and in defense of freedom of expression. Nominees for this award are selected by political groups and over 40 members of the European Parliament. This year, the European People’s Party nominated Mahsa Amini and the women of Iran for the award.
