Message from Empress Farah Pahlavi Following Death of ‘Blue Girl’: Her Death Symbolizes the Burning of Dreams of Half Iran’s Population

Empress Farah Pahlavi issued a message in response to the death of a girl who immolated herself after being convicted of entering a stadium, stating: “The death of the blue girl is a symbol of the burning of the dreams of half the population of our ancient land of Iran, who for 40 years have fought for obtaining the most basic of their rightful rights, and how courageously they have stood.”
Empress Farah Pahlavi, offering condolences to the family of Sahar Khodayari, added: “It is unthinkable and deeply horrifying that in the twenty-first century in Iran, a young girl loses her life simply for entering a stadium, women who not so long ago freely attended stadiums alongside men to watch games.”

Sahar Khodayari, a supporter of Tehran’s Esteghlal team who had been arrested months earlier while attempting to enter a stadium and watch a football match, recently immolated herself in front of one of the judicial authorities in Tehran after learning of her potential prison sentence.
