Official death toll from coronavirus reaches 16,000; Hassan Rouhani’s government spokesman contracts COVID-19

Hassan Rouhani’s government spokesman has been hospitalized after testing positive for coronavirus. Meanwhile, official statistics announced that the number of victims of the virus in Iran has reached 16,000 people.
According to IRIB news agency, Ali Rabiei has been resting at home since last week and “has been hospitalized at the insistence of physicians.”
The report does not specify when the government spokesman contracted coronavirus.
Previously, several government officials, including Massoumeh Ebtekar, the President’s Deputy for Women’s Affairs, and Ali Asghar Mounesan, the Minister of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, had contracted COVID-19.
In recent days, despite rising coronavirus statistics, Hassan Rouhani’s position on holding Muharram mourning ceremonies even in areas classified as red zones due to coronavirus spread has faced numerous criticisms and questions.
The Iranian President, emphasizing that there is no choice between mourning and health, has called for holding Muharram ceremonies while “observing health protocols.”
Ahmad Tavakkoli, a member of the Expediency Discernment Council, tweeted that the current situation could “endanger the lives of thousands of mourners,” calling for the promotion of home mourning sessions.
