One Dead and Four Injured Following 6.1 Magnitude Earthquake in Razavi Khorasan

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook the city of Mashhad and several other cities in Razavi Khorasan Province on Wednesday morning, April 5th.

According to Iran’s Student News Agency (ISNA), citing a Red Crescent official, “one person was killed and four were injured” as a result of the earthquake.

No official report on the potential damages from the earthquake has been released yet, but reports indicate that the telephone network has been disrupted in some areas near the earthquake’s epicenter.

In this regard, the state broadcasting agency reported that telephone lines in the city of Mashhad were also cut off following the earthquake.

The news website Baharonline also reported that the earthquake and its “severe” aftershocks caused panic among Mashhad residents and prompted them to flee to the streets.

No official information has yet been released regarding the injuries or potential casualties caused by the earthquake.

According to Iran’s official news agency IRNA, the earthquake occurred at a depth of ten kilometers and approximately one hundred kilometers south of Mashhad, the provincial capital.

The news agency reported the earthquake’s epicenter to be in the city of Sefidsang near Ferdows.

Mezan news agency, quoting the deputy operations officer of the Red Crescent Organization, reported “60 to 100 percent destruction” of several residential buildings located at the earthquake’s epicenter in Razavi Khorasan.

Reuters news agency, citing the U.S. Geological Survey, reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 33 kilometers.

The earthquake occurred at 10:40 AM on Wednesday morning.

According to Iran’s Seismological Center, following this severe earthquake, several aftershocks measuring between 3 to 4.7 on the Richter scale shook the city of Sefidsang.
