Parliamentarian: 170 Porters Killed and Injured Over the Past Year

The representative of the people of Sardasht and Piranshahr in parliament stated that the number of porters killed and injured over the past year reached 170 individuals.

According to Hrana news agency, citing Shafqna, Jalal Mahmoodzadeh, the representative of Sardasht and Piranshahr, reported the killing and injury of 170 porters during the year 1400.

Referring to this statistic, he stated: This year as well, a number of porters have been killed or injured.

Jalal Mahmoodzadeh, pointing to the unsuitable conditions of porters, held multiple organs responsible for the current situation of porters and border residents, including the “Ministry of Industry, Mining and Trade, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Oil, and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

Porter work is a deceptive and arduous profession that people in border areas resort to due to lack of job opportunities, and annually dozens are killed or injured in the face of natural hazards or as a result of gunfire from border guards.

In part of the annual report on the situation of human rights in Iran; specifically for the year 2021, it addressed citizens who were killed or injured by military organizations.

Beyond material damages, killing of pack animals and incidents such as frostbite and avalanches, the report documented the killing of 23 porters (border carriers) and the injury of 81 of them by border and law enforcement forces.

It should be noted that 28 other porters were also affected by climatic and geographical conditions such as frostbite and falling from heights, of which 16 porters were injured and 12 porters lost their lives.
