Shaparak Shajarian, Mandatory Hijab Protester, Sentenced to 2 Years Prison and 18 Years Suspended Sentence
Some reports circulating on social media indicate that Shaparak Shajarian, one of the “Girls of Revolution Street,” has been sentenced to two years of imprisonment and 18 years of suspended sentence.
Shaparak Shajarian joined the symbolic protests by a number of women and girls in Tehran and several other cities against mandatory hijab. She removed her headscarf and placed it on a stick in Qitaria, Tehran.
Last February, a number of girls and women protested against mandatory hijab by going on top of an electrical platform on Revolution Street in Tehran, removing their headscarves and placing them on sticks. This symbolic act subsequently spread to other areas of Tehran and several other cities. However, since it began on Revolution Street, these protesters became known as the “Girls of Revolution Street.”
Police subsequently arrested a number of these protesters, including Shaparak Shajarian, and released her on bail.
