Shiraz City Council Member Who Supported Two Baha’is Imprisoned Again

Mehdi Hajati’s wife, a member of the Shiraz City Council, announced his arrest to carry out a prison sentence.
Zohreh Rastegari wrote on Sunday, June 2, in a tweet that officers had come to their home hours earlier and transferred her husband to prison to serve a one-year sentence.
According to her, the final ruling against Mr. Hajati was delivered to him via text message on Saturday, and was executed one day later.
Last September, Hajati wrote on his social media account about his efforts to free two detained Baha’i citizens: “Over the past ten days I have knocked on every door to secure the release of two arrested Baha’i friends and have not succeeded. Our generation is obliged, as long as it stands against foreign enemies, to continue efforts to reform judicial procedures and other matters that have endangered social justice.”
Following this tweet, he was detained for some time, and after his release, he was not permitted to attend council sessions for a while.

Last December, the head of the Shiraz City Council’s Citizenship Rights Commission told the ILNA news agency that with “the completion of the investigation phase of the case,” the restriction on Mr. Hajati’s presence in the council had been lifted.
Details of the ruling issued against him have not been disclosed.
