Statement from Canada, Sweden, Ukraine, and Britain: Trial of Those Responsible for Downing Ukrainian Plane in Iran Must Be Transparent and Public

The International Coordination and Response Group for victims of the Ukrainian flight, comprised of representatives from Canada, Sweden, Ukraine, and Britain whose citizens were killed during the downing of Ukrainian Airlines flight 752 by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps missiles, issued a joint statement protesting “violations of international law” by the Islamic Republic of Iran.

In this statement released Thursday, June 3rd, it states: “Iran’s actions and what Iran has excluded from investigations related to this matter constitute violations of international law.”

In another section of the statement, it is written: “Due to the occurrence of this tragedy, the citizens and passengers of that flight have been seriously and irreversibly harmed, and Iran is obligated under law to provide compensation.”

These countries, which had citizens on that flight, demand that “the Islamic Republic of Iran acknowledge its mistake, provide a full account of the incident, make a public apology, and return the remaining and stolen possessions of the victims.”

The countries issuing this statement have also requested that Iran “ensure that such an incident does not happen again”.

“The trial of those responsible for this incident in a transparent, public, and lawful manner” is another demand of this statement.

The statement continues: “Appropriate material and moral compensation shall be paid to the families of the victims, without discrimination based on nationality and in accordance with international law.”

These countries have requested that Iran set a date for initiating formal negotiations on compensation.
