Tehran City Council Member: 13,000 People Buried in Tehran Over Past Two Months

A member of Tehran’s city council announced that 13,000 people have been buried in Tehran over the past two months.

On Wednesday, Ordibehesht 10, the newspaper “Shargh” also reported that following the coronavirus outbreak, the civil registration organization “in a strange move does not announce new death statistics in the country.”

Mohammad Javad Haghshenass, a member of Tehran’s city council, announced in an interview with the Wednesday edition of the newspaper “Aftab Yazd” that 13,000 people were buried in Tehran during the months of Esfand and Farvardin.

He did not specify how many of these people were infected with coronavirus.

This Tehran city council member said that by comparing the number of deaths in the current year with the same period last year, one can arrive at the statistics of people who died as a result of coronavirus.

However, the Shargh newspaper reported that the civil registration organization does not announce new death statistics in the country.

In the first three months of last year, 13,884 people died in Tehran, which means on average 4,628 people died per month and 9,256 people in two months. The difference between the statistics of these two months and the two months of Esfand 98 and Farvardin 99 is more than 3,700 people.

Meanwhile, the Shargh newspaper wrote that comparing death statistics from similar periods in the two years is “not illuminating” because the number of people who died for other reasons has decreased in some cases. According to this report, for example, the number of people killed in accidents has decreased by 40 percent.

Previously, Nahid Khodakarmia, a member of Tehran’s city council, had announced that 70 to 100 coronavirus patients are buried daily in the city.

Based on the estimate announced by this city council member, it is clear that between 4,000 to 7,000 patients suspected of coronavirus have died in Tehran since last Esfand.

Mojtaba Yazdani, the deputy of urban services at Tehran Municipality, announced on Farvardin 24 that a new section for coronavirus victims was prepared in Behesht Zahra cemetery, and so far 10,000 new graves have been dug in this section.

However, the Ministry of Health has announced the number of deaths in the entire country to be around 6,000 people.

Meanwhile, the Shargh newspaper wrote that the Ministry of Health’s statistics are not the complete statistics of infected and deceased people, but rather statistics of people who have referred to medical centers and taken coronavirus tests.

According to this newspaper’s report, only 442,590 coronavirus tests have been conducted in Iran.

Previously, some members of parliament and members of Tehran’s city council had accused the Ministry of Health of covering up the announcement of coronavirus statistics.
