Ten-Year Prison Sentence of Abbas Vahedian Shahrudi, Signatory to Khamenei Resignation Statement, Becomes Final

Reports indicate that the ten-year prison sentence of Abbas Vahedian Shahrudi, a teacher and signatory to a statement by 14 political and civil activists calling for the resignation of the leader of the Islamic Republic, has become final.

The Hrana human rights website reported that the sentence became final due to Abbas Vahedian Shahrudi’s failure to file an appeal and was delivered to him while in detention.

Abbas Vahedian Shahrudi was arrested on Wednesday, September 1st of the current year in the city of Bandar Anzali.

According to Hrana, the sentence against Abbas Vahedian Shahrudi was issued by Branch 4 of the Revolutionary Court in Mashhad in connection with a case from 2019, on charges of forming a group with intent to undermine national security, in accordance with Article 498 of the Islamic Penal Code, and became final due to Vahedian Shahrudi’s failure to file an appeal.

Abbas Vahedian Shahrudi is among 14 civil and political activists inside Iran who, on June 12, 2019, published an open letter calling for Ali Khamenei to resign from his leadership of the Iranian government and for fundamental changes to the constitution. Most of the authors of these letters have been imprisoned and received heavy judicial sentences.
