Transfer of Amirhossein Moradi and Ali Younesi to General Ward of Evin Prison

Amirhossein Moradi and Ali Younesi, detained students at Sharif University of Technology, were transferred on Saturday, June 25, from the Ministry of Intelligence detention facility known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison to the general ward of the prison, more than 2 years after their arrest.

According to Hrana news agency, the news organ of the Iranian human rights activists collective, Amirhossein Moradi and Ali Younesi, detained students at Sharif University of Technology, were transferred to the general ward of Evin Prison after 808 days of detention.

Mostafa Nili, the lawyer defending these individuals, stated in a post on his personal page: “Ali Younesi and Amirhossein Moradi were transferred last night from Ward 209 to the general wards of Evin Prison. These two young men were held in solitary confinement under harsh conditions for more than 26 months. The case prosecutor had requested from the beginning that they should not be transferred out of Ward 209 until a final verdict was issued, and this is indeed what happened.”

This lawyer had reported in mid-June of this year that the verdict for Younesi and Moradi had been upheld by Branch 36 of the Tehran Court of Appeals.

Regarding the charges brought against these individuals and the sentences issued in the first instance, as well as the enforceable sentence following the finalization of the verdict, he had stated: “These two outstanding students of Sharif University were sentenced in the first instance to 10 years imprisonment on charges of sabotage, 5 years for gathering and conspiracy with intent to act against national security, and 1 year for propaganda against the regime. The appeals court upheld this sentence exactly, and accordingly, the most severe sentence of 10 years imprisonment will be enforceable.”

Nili also stated that, considering the objections raised against the issued verdict, “One of the most important issues is the formal objection regarding the change in the charge description, as the formal rules of the Criminal Procedure Code were not observed in the first instance court. However, the appeals court did not address this issue either.”

Ali Younesi, a computer engineering student, and Amirhossein Moradi, a physics student at Sharif University of Technology, were arrested on April 11, 2020, by Ministry of Intelligence officers and transferred to the detention facility of this institution known as Ward 209 of Evin Prison. According to reports, the arrest of these students was carried out by plainclothes officers without presenting a court order and was accompanied by beatings.

Gholamhossein Esmaili, spokesman for Iran’s Judiciary, accused these students on May 6, 2020, of collaborating with an opposition group (the People’s Mujahedin).

Shortly after, Aida Younesi, Ali Younesi’s sister, refuted these accusations by publishing a video on social media and attributed the charges to her parents’ imprisonment in the 1980s.

It should be noted that Amirhossein Moradi won the silver medal in the National Astronomy Olympiad in 2017, and Ali Younesi won the silver medal in the National Astronomy Olympiad in 2016 and the gold medal in the Astronomy Olympiad in 2017. Additionally, Ali Younesi won the gold medal in the 12th International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics held in China and achieved first place.
