UN Secretary-General Calls for Halt to Israel-Gaza Conflict

Antonio Guterres called for an immediate end to the clashes between Israel and Gaza. He warned that these conflicts would fuel the growth of extremism in the region. An emergency session is scheduled to be held at the United Nations Security Council.

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, wrote on his Twitter account, referring to the killing of civilians and innocent people in the clashes of the past five days between Israel and the Gaza Strip, that these conflicts will only lead to an increase in extremism throughout the region.

Five days have passed since the beginning of Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip and the launch of rockets by Hamas to various cities in Israel, and tensions in many Israeli cities between Israeli Arabs and extremist Jews have reached an unprecedented peak. Reciprocal attacks between the Israeli army and Hamas continue, and the situation in Israeli cities remains tense.

Tunisia, Norway, and China have requested that an emergency session be held on Sunday, May 16, at the United Nations Security Council regarding the clashes in Gaza.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the permanent representative of the United States to the United Nations, confirmed in a tweet the holding of this session to review the situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip.
