US Calls for Immediate Release of Two French Citizens in Iran

Following Iranian state television’s broadcast of images describing details of the detention of two French citizens, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department called on Iran on Tuesday to release them immediately.

One day earlier, Iranian state television, in a report attributed to the Ministry of Intelligence, had accused the two French detainees in Iran of “espionage” and “communication” with teacher and worker activists for “organizing unrest, social disorder, and destabilizing the country.”

The two French citizens are named Cecile Kohler and Jacques Paris, who according to the French Teachers’ and Educational Union are employees of this organization and had traveled to Iran for “vacation.”

The French Foreign Ministry described the accusations against the two citizens as “baseless” and called for their immediate release.
