Economic Protests in Iran; Gatherings of Retirees, Tax Officials and Farmers in Several Provinces

Continuing economic protests in Iran, oil industry retirees held simultaneous protest gatherings in several cities. At the same time, farmers took to the streets in Isfahan and telecommunications retirees gathered in the capital, demanding their professional grievances be addressed.

Protest gatherings took place on Tuesday, April 12, in the cities of Shiraz, Arak, Ahvaz, Kermanshah, Tehran, Karaj, Isfahan, Abadan, Yazd, Hamadan, and Ardabil.

Telecommunications retirees in Tehran took to the capital’s streets with slogans “Death to the oppressor” and “Cry out against all this injustice.”

However, according to reports, the gathering of telecommunications retirees in Tehran was met with violence and arrests of protesters by law enforcement.

Amir Kalhor, a journalist in Iran, by reposting a video of violent confrontation with protesters who had gathered to address their problems, tweeted: “This is the status of retirees in the Islamic Republic; kicking, beating and throwing them on the ground.”

This was while the gathering of oil industry retirees in Ahvaz was also tense. A video circulated on social media shows one of the protesters at the Ahvaz gathering saying: “Record my video and send it to the authorities; I am not afraid.”

Furthermore, videos circulated on social media show that on Tuesday, Isfahan farmers once again gathered in front of the Isfahan Governorate’s office in protest against the failure to provide water rights.

One of the published videos depicts the words of one of the protesting farmers, who in the presence of law enforcement officers present at the scene, says if officials do not respond, they will continue their protest by gathering on the streets.

According to reports, specialized dental school students in Tehran, Hamadan, and Yazd also protested in response to “failure to increase residency salaries.”

Simultaneously, images have also been released of gatherings of tax officials across the country in several provinces including Tehran and North Khorasan.

In recent months, various professional protests in Iran have been increasing significantly.
