Nazanin Zaghari’s Husband Expresses Disappointment Over Bagheri’s London Visit Results

Richard Ratcliffe, husband of Nazanin Zaghari, has stated that negotiations between Ali Bagheri and a representative of the British Foreign Office have yielded no results. Richard Ratcliffe has launched a hunger strike to pressure the British government regarding his wife’s release.

Ali Bagheri Kani, deputy to Hossein Amirabdollahian, foreign minister of Ibrahim Raisi’s government, traveled to London to meet with a representative of the British Foreign Office.

Ahead of the seventh round of negotiations of the JCPOA Joint Commission in Vienna (December 8 – November 29), Ali Bagheri traveled to Paris, Berlin, and London to meet and discuss with representatives of the European troika.

Given the ongoing detention of Nazanin Zaghari, an Iranian-British dual national, attention was focused on Bagheri’s trip to London. It was expected that the issue of Nazanin Zaghari’s release might also be raised during talks between officials of Britain and the Islamic Republic.

The Associated Press news agency on Thursday, November 11, published a report from London addressing statements made by Richard Ratcliffe, Nazanin Zaghari’s husband.

Richard Ratcliffe is now on his 19th day of sit-in and hunger strike outside the building of the British Foreign Office in London.

Following the end of Bagheri Kani’s meeting with British Foreign Office officials, James Cleverly, one of Liz Truss’s advisors, British Foreign Secretary, met with Richard Ratcliffe.

After speaking with Cleverly, Nazanin Zaghari’s husband told the Associated Press reporter that in his view, Thursday’s negotiations between Iranian and British officials had yielded little result.

Following his meeting with Cleverly, he said: “To be honest, it was a disappointing meeting.” Nazanin Zaghari’s husband continued: “I had hoped that this meeting could bring some breakthrough.” Richard Ratcliffe’s reference was to his wife’s case in Iran.

Ratcliffe stated that he has no hope for any development regarding his wife’s continued detention in Iran. However, he said that he has promised his wife, his family, and especially his mother to take care of his health and to end his hunger strike in a timely manner.

Ratcliffe had previously stated that Boris Johnson’s government and the country’s new foreign minister are not making sufficient efforts to secure Nazanin Zaghari’s release.
