Retirees Hold Protest Rally on Social Security Day in Iran

A group of retirees held a protest rally in front of the Ministry of Labor on the occasion of “Social Security Day” to object to their unaddressed demands.

Retirees held another protest rally on Tuesday, July 25th, despite the fact that their demands have not been resolved despite several previous rallies.

These rallies, which intensified from late 2018, have continued in recent months. The Council of Iranian Retirees, in a statement announcing that this rally was held on Social Security Day, wrote: “What is left of social security for retirees other than a name and title?

Alongside these deprivations, there are statistics of embezzlements worth thousands of billions, which have set records in history, and alongside sanctions, have left a devastated and ravaged economy in the hands of us retirees and wage earners.”

Protesting retirees condemned astronomical salaries and public misery, imprisonment and threats against activists with their chants, and demanded effective insurance for workers as well as the return of management of retirement funds to the retirees themselves.

These protest rallies by retirees from various professions, including educators, come at a time when, following recent price increases, the number of economic corruption cases in Iran has increased, some of whose accused are also known officials and figures.
