UK Foreign Secretary: Iran Must Do the Right Thing and Release Dual Nationals

Britain’s Foreign Secretary has once again called for the release of Anoosheh Ashoori, Morad Tahbaz, and Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, Iranian-British prisoners held in Iranian prisons, describing their release as “the right thing to do.”

Dominic Raab, Britain’s Foreign Secretary, wrote on Friday, April 25, in a tweet: “As the current sessions of the UN Human Rights Council conclude, we once again call on Iran to do the right thing and release Anoosheh Ashoori, Morad Tahbaz, and Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe so they can return to the UK and their loved ones.”

Mr. Raab further wrote in his tweet: “We will make every effort to bring them home.”

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe and Anoosheh Ashoori hold both Iranian and British citizenship. Morad Tahbaz, a prominent Iranian environmental activist, also holds American and British citizenship and has been sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Islamic Republic.

Some Western analysts say the Islamic Republic uses dual nationals as hostages to extract money and concessions from Western governments.

The United States has repeatedly condemned the arbitrary and despotic detention of American citizens and nationals of other countries, including dual-national Iranians, by the Islamic Republic, and has called for their immediate and unconditional release.
