“Two Charges” Against Woman Arrested After Kicking Clergyman’s Turban

Mohammad Taghi Hosseini, deputy secretary of Qom’s Amr bil-Ma’ruf wa Nahi anil-Munkar headquarters (Committee for Promoting Virtue and Preventing Vice), confirmed the arrest of a woman who kicked a clergyman’s turban in protest against his remarks about her hijab and his behavior. He stated that she insulted the person promoting virtue and preventing vice and “also disrespected the sacred garment of the clergy.”

According to him, each of these matters is condemnable in its own right and warrants special investigation.

Mohammad Taghi Hosseini told ILNA news agency that the woman is currently in detention. The process of completing her file is underway so it can eventually be sent to court.

The Qom Amr bil-Ma’ruf wa Nahi anil-Munkar official provided no further details about the date of the woman’s arrest or her place of detention, stating instead: “This incident was not new and only its video was recently released in cyberspace.”

Two days ago, a video titled “Stomping on the Turban of a Bothersome Clergyman” was posted on social media by a citizen from Qom. According to the video, a man with a stick attacked a woman and told her to observe proper hijab. In response, the woman removed his turban and stomped on it with her feet.

Mohammad Taghi Hosseini said such individuals must be dealt with seriously, because if this does not happen, someone else might refrain from giving verbal reminders and say we no longer promote virtue and prevent vice.
